As you already know, if you're going to be sitting or lying down for much of the time following your operation, you'll need fewer calories than usual to maintain your weight at its present level. But that doesn't mean you have to starve yourself! In fact, after a major operation, your body will be working hard to heal itself and a sensible, well-balanced diet will help that happen faster than if you load yourself down with sugary, fatty and heavy carbohydrate based foods.

So first of all, stop worrying. It is quite possible for you still to enjoy your food whilst you're recuperating. You need to eat lots of fruit and vegetables. Don't load the fruit with sugar, choose fruits that are really sweet in themselves, then you won't need to add sugar. Don't slather butter or dressing over the vegetables - let their flavour speak for itself. You will need carbohydrate, but try to keep bread, rice and pasta to a minimum. Some vegetables contain carbohydrates anyway - broccoli, cauliflower and carrots, for example, and fruit also - apples, strawberries, plums, blueberries. But the carb. content of fruit and veg is much lower than it is when you eat it as a sandwich with two slices of bread and a high fat filling.

You must have protein, but again you can keep this low in calories if you have lean chicken or turkey breast without skin or fat. Cottage cheese is also a good source both of protein and calcium, and although on its own it's pretty bland, if you chop parsley, chives, spring onions or finely diced cucumber into it and sprinkle with a little savoury salt, it's really tasty.

White fish is another good source of protein, but again don't serve it with sauce which is high in fats and carbs. Grated cheddar cheese is nice on white fish, but it's also got a high fat content. If you do this, keep the cheese you add to a small amount (1oz) otherwise you'll cancel out the benefit of the low-calorie white fish. Fresh tomato puree is good on white fish, and you can also use a little of the savoury salt with it to bring out the flavour.

Otherwise, eat lots of salad stuff - and if you can't manage it without a dressing, make sure you choose one that's low fat. You can also dilute salad dressings like low-calorie Ranch or Thousand Island with a small quantity of skimmed or semi-skimmed milk, to make it go further. The milk will give you calcium to help make your bones stronger and keep your teeth in good shape.

I'm working a bit in the dark because I don't know what your present weight is, but if you're happy with it, you should be able to maintain it by choosing carefully the type of food you eat whilst you are unable to exercise. Lightly boiled or steamed vegetables are great for filling you up, and if you do get hunger pangs, drink loads of water. It's the best thing I've found for stopping hunger pangs, and often we tend to think we're hungry when in reality we're thirsty!

Don't nibble or snack! Stick to the same time each day for meals, and if you do find that you're getting too hungry, divide the meals into smaller portions and have four, five or even six a day instead of three. You can keep the portions within reasonable limits if you use a smaller plate - psychologically, it works because when the plate is full, you think you're eating the same amount as you usually do on a bigger plate.

If you're can't resist a snack, cut raw carrot and celery into sticks and keep them in the refrigerator so you can help yourself when you feel like it. Then if you don't want those, you will realise that you're not really hungry at all. You probably just need something to do, to take your mind off food and snacking.

I do wish you all the best for a speedy recovery, and hope you will find that even if you do gain a bit of weight, it will be such a small amount that once you're back to exercising, it'll drop off in no time.

Reply:Try to eat more meals and less full.
Reply:Hm, well it seems like you have a mental thing going on where you are using food for possibly comfort. I know it is incredibly hard sometimes to fight food cravings, just make sure you fill up on three meals a day. If you want to have snacks make them fruits/vegetables. Eat chicken and tuna if you eat meat. Stay away from red meat. Avoid too much dairy, stay away from the junk foods. As soon as you are well again begin a new exercise routine. If you feel like it's just out of your hands here are psychologists that can help you. I hope you get better soon.
