I know it is long, but please read and give advise! Teen thining about joining politics!?

For all the past Singapore elections, the People's Action Party has easily won the general elections. For the lastest elections(last year), they rating across all wards dropped from about 70% support to about 60+%. Of all the seats, the opposition parties only managed to gather 2 wards but their rating in those wards increased!

Many citizens feel that PAP will lose the control of the goverment soon, but maybe because it is a new prime minister? According to our Mentor Minister Lee Kuan Yew, he feels that Singaporeans are in a position where we don't want to give PAP a clear mandate in case they got too cocky, but still wants PAP to win the general election.

I'm 17 and it is legal for me to join a political party. Should I join PAP? Is it advisable? Can someone give me more information about politics etc?

Initially adopting a traditionalist Leninist party organization together with a vanguard cadre from its communist-leaning faction in 1958 the PAP Executive later expelled the leftist faction, bringing the ideological basis of the party into the centre, and later in the 60s, moving further to the right.

Although Singapore's laws are inherited from British and British Indian laws, including many elements of English common law, the PAP has also consistently rejected liberal democratic values as "Western." Laws restricting freedom of speech are justified by claims that unrestricted speech may breed disharmony within Singapore's multi-racial, multi-religious society. Some offences can lead to heavy fines or caning, and there are laws which allow capital punishment for first-degree murder and drug trafficking. More recently the PAP government has claimed to relax some of its socially conservative policies and created a "Feedback Unit"[20] to receive comments on some policies and public services.

In Singapore, being a politician is a lifelong career. You are never forgotten and are well advised never to forget.

If you do want to go into politics, plan your path. Very carefully. Merge your life strategy with your ambitions in politics because both will not get very far without the other supporting in some manner. Don't rush though.

At your age, you can join a grassroots organization or other affliated organizations that cater to politically aware young adults. This will be the first step.

As for joining political parties, you should really decide later. Stay on the fringes, keep learning and decide what you want to achieve for Singapore before committing to a party.

FYI, the PAP didn't win't the last election 'easily'; alot of effort went into it! By and large, the PAP has done Singapore a tremendous amount of good, is relatively consistent, and is a safe choice IF they allow you to join them.

Best of Luck,

Jimbo
