For Border Collie owners Only ~?

For Border Collie owners Only ~?
Hi, I have always had border collies in my life... here is what I love about them:

their intelligence... it is a double edged sword. You have to keep them mentally stimulated or they will find something to do themselves, and that is usually not something you want. They will spend most of their time training you, so you have to be on your toes at all times! lol!

Their energy- I work all day. So do they. You do not get a day to veg, not ever, be ready for that..If you walk them at 7 am, then you do that. If you oversleep, prepare for a b.c. having a temper tantrum! lol! And if you are sick, you had better not mind a dog sitting on your chest all day, 'cause that is where they park themselves.

Their devotion- expect this dog to be with you, under you, behind you, running around and in front of you at all times. They adore their people and will wait and watch for when it is time to work. You have to be careful that you don't let them make this decision, or you will be throwing the ball or frisbee 24/7.

Things to watch for, being over reactive and physical issues. Some bc's can be very dominant with other dogs. Also, be prepared to train, train, train with this pup. You need to think about what activity you are going to do with this dog be it herding, agility, flyball, therapy work, akc, rally, nadac events, obedience, hiking, running, whatever... this breed is not for the meek or the inactive! Hope this helps, dd
Reply:My collie is wonderful

When taken for a walk, she goes off lead but won't go out of my line of sight.

When she meets other dogs she will lie flat on the ground to show she is no threat

When she meets other people she sits at their feet - she doesn't jump up at them

When we throw a ball she jumps up to 5 feet in the air to catch it before it can bounce,

She's as fast as a greyhound, but then we have the hillsides that she can run on here in Wales

She's so clever that she can open the fridge - I now have a child lock on it and because my children are too old for such things, all visitors think that I have my husband on a diet
Reply:Hi I am an AKC conformation handler. A friend of mine has two border collies they are not related at all and they both have totally different attitudes Emma is hyper and Remi is more laid back.

It depends on what lines you get a border collie from. If the line is mainly a herding and Agility line you will probably have a dog with a lot of prey drive which means very hyper.

If you get one from a line of mainly conformation they will probably be more laid back.
Reply:Collies have very high energy levels that require much activity or work. They were orginally cattle dogs who herd, so they like to stay busy. I read in a magaziene they'd work 20 hours a day if they had enough work to do. If you don't give them something to do they will constantly pester you with a ball or a frisbee. THey are the smartest breed of dog with the brain of a 4th grader. Collies are usually great with strangers, but because of their energy level they can be very excited to see new people...They aren't the best with children because children move fast and make high noises which make the collies want to herd them, but with training and socialization at a young age a collie is a very potential pet if you have time to give them the care they need. Good Luck!!!!
Reply:Border Collies were originally bred to herd sheep. They are incredibly hyper and smart and must constantly have something to do and something that gets out their energy.

Here is a good site that will tell you more

Reply:Border collies were bred to be able to run sheep for about 50 miles a day and so they need a tremendous amount of mental and physical exercise. They are not for the first time dog owner and belong in the category along with other breeds that are awesome because they have such great working drive and intelligence, but terrible in the wrong hands. They are fantastic for flyball, agility, herding, obedience, dock diving, etc, but not as a house pet just sitting around all day. Other breeds like this are Belgian Malinois, Siberian huskies, Australian cattle dogs, and American pit bull terriers.
